Overview
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is located adjacent to Goldsboro, North Carolina, in the coastal plain region approximately 60 miles southeast of Raleigh. Home of the 4th Fighter Wing – one of the Air Force’s premier fighter wings – Seymour Johnson operates the F-15E Strike Eagle, the Air Force’s primary dual-role strike fighter. The 4th Fighter Wing carries the proud heritage of the World War II “4th Fighter Group,” which claimed more enemy aircraft kills than any other USAAF group in World War II. The base is named for Navy Ensign Seymour A. Johnson, a Goldsboro native who was killed in a 1941 aircraft accident.
