Arnold Air Force Base

Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, is home of the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), which the Arnold overview on MilitaryINSTALLATIONS describes as “an Air Force Materiel Command facility” operating “68 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket motor and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units.” Its stated mission: “Test and evaluate systems to meet the demands of the National Defense Strategy.” Of the 3,045 personnel the overview counts for Fiscal Year 2026, 40 were active-duty military, 7 were Air Force Reserve and National Guard, and 2,537 were contractor and subcontractor employees.

Where it is

The overview places Arnold “in middle Tennessee nearly equal distance between Nashville and Chattanooga”, and says the nearby cities of Manchester, Tullahoma and Winchester “form a triangle around AEDC, which straddles Coffee and Franklin counties in Tennessee.” There is currently no base transportation on the installation, so plan on your own vehicle.

Access and security

“Arnold AFB access requires CAC ID for active duty military, retiree and dependents”, and some buildings require a special security badge, according to the Arnold MilitaryINSTALLATIONS page. All firearms must be registered on base; Security Forces can answer registration questions at 931-454-5662. The base’s area code is 931.

Emergencies: know which number reaches base responders

To reach Arnold AFB emergency fire, police and ambulance, the installation lists 931-454-5648. The page adds a warning: “if you dial 911 from your cell phone, your call will be routed to the LOCAL 911 Dispatch Center, not Arnold AFB’s emergency responders.” Save the base emergency number in your phone before you start work on the installation.

The health care page lists a Medical Aid Station at 225 Von Karman Road, Building 225, open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. (931-454-5351); it is closed weekends and holidays. Ask the Medical Aid Station which services it provides for you and where you would be taken in an emergency.

Lodging and housing

The Wingo Inn sits on Woods Reservoir at 4176 Westover Road, Building 3027, per the temporary housing page. Travelers on orders reserve through the front desk at 931-454-3051; Space Available travelers can book up to 30 days in advance. The inn has two pet suites, and a list of local kennels is available on request if those are taken.

For family housing and off-base rentals, the housing page points to the Housing Office and Housing Referral Office at 100 Kindel Drive, Suite B317, open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (931-454-7687).

Units and schools

The installation’s major units list names the 804th Test Group under Air Force Materiel Command (931-454-7621). Because the complex straddles Coffee and Franklin counties, ask the Housing Office or your sponsor which school district serves the address you are considering.

Confirm your CAC or badge requirements, register any firearm, save 931-454-5648 for on-base emergencies, and book the Wingo Inn early if you need temporary lodging.
