“The 96th Test Wing executes developmental test and evaluation enabling the warfighter to put weapons on target in all battlespace media while also providing support for all other Team Eglin missions as the installation host wing”, according to the Eglin overview on MilitaryINSTALLATIONS. The overview says Eglin hosts 40 tenant units, including the 7th Special Forces Group, the U.S. Army Ranger Camp and the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal School, and lists a land range of 726 square miles and a water range of 123,000 square miles. Eglin is in Okaloosa County, Florida.
Check-in
“Your first stop is your unit Commander Support Staff”, the check-in page says; if your unit has no CSS, contact the Military Personnel Flight at 850-882-6331. The Newcomer’s Orientation for military members, DoW civilians, contractors and spouses takes place the first Wednesday of each month. Eligible members with PCS, retirement, Palace Chase or separation orders can apply through the Air and Space Forces Aid Society for $200 per child up to age 12, with a maximum of $1,000 per family, toward child care.
The Eglin Visitor Center is at the Armament Museum, 100 Museum Dr., open Monday through Sunday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. (850-883-0948).
Housing: Mayroad
“At Eglin AFB, military family housing is privatized. Mayroad owns the family housing and is responsible for maintaining, repairing, constructing and managing the community”, per the housing page. Housing Office, 2950 Azaela Dr., Building 38499: 850-882-4533, extension 3.
Medical care: Eglin Hospital
The 96th Medical Group’s Eglin Hospital at 307 Boatner Road, Building 2825, lists its appointment line as 850-883-8600 and states that its “Emergency Room is open 24/7”, per the health care page. For immediate urgent assistance, call Security Forces or Military Police at 850-882-2502, or dial 911 for all emergencies, the emergency assistance page says.
Schools: Okaloosa County
“Eglin AFB has one school on base (Eglin Elementary School) which provides education for grades K-4”, per the education page, and students who live on base and are in middle and high school attend Lewis Middle School or Niceville High School, with bus transportation from the installation. The page suggests enrolling your child as soon as you arrive, even if you are temporarily in base lodging. School Liaison Officer: 850-882-4319; Okaloosa County School District: 850-833-3100.
Before you arrive
Go to your unit CSS first, plan for the first-Wednesday Newcomer’s Orientation, contact Mayroad about housing, and enroll children with the Okaloosa County School District as soon as you arrive.
