Checking in
All Soldiers sign in at their unit of assignment before in-processing at the Welcome Center, 9625 Middleton Road, Building 1189, with a copy of DA Form 31 and their assignment orders and amendments, per the Fort Belvoir check-in page. The Welcome Center is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. except the DEERS/ID Card Office, and ID cards are not processed after 3:45 p.m. (703-805-5578). If you arrive at Dulles or Reagan National, you arrange your own travel to the post; keep all your receipts for your travel claim.
Housing: The Villages at Belvoir and the HSO rule
The Villages at Belvoir offers two- to five-bedroom homes in 15 village communities on post, with new, traditional and historic homes, per the Fort Belvoir housing page. Homes are available to all military families assigned to the Military District of Washington; contact the family housing welcome center, 5994 12th St. (703-619-3877 or 888-740-9851). If you are stationed at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, where on-post family housing is reserved for specific positions, this is one of the installations where you can apply.
All military members with families are required by the Department of the Army to report to the Housing Services Office as part of in-processing, per the government housing page. It is at 9851 Harding Place, Building 258, open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays (703-805-3019).
Personnel authorized BAQ at the without-dependents rate in pay grade E5 and below are required to live in the barracks. McRee Barracks, on the North Post, has six buildings with 404 rooms; new arrivals using it report to the Unaccompanied Personnel Housing office, Building 2105A, by 9 a.m. on the next duty day.
Medical care
Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center, formerly Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, is at 9300 DeWitt Loop (571-231-3224), per the health care page.
Schools
Children living on Fort Belvoir attend Fort Belvoir Elementary School on post, Walt Whitman Middle School and Mount Vernon High School; children in the Woodlawn Village community attend Woodlawn Elementary School, per the education page. Most children living off post attend Fairfax County or Prince William County schools, the page says.
Pets
Dogs and cats over four months old must be vaccinated against rabies and licensed every year, per the shipping pets page. Quarantine is not required for pets arriving from overseas, as long as you have a valid veterinarian’s certificate stating the pet has no diseases and current rabies inoculations.
Vehicles
Virginia’s hands-free driving law is explained in the Joint Base Langley-Eustis guide.
Before you arrive
Sign in at your unit first, then the Welcome Center, and if you have a family, see the Housing Services Office during in-processing. If you want on-post housing, call The Villages at Belvoir as early as you can.
