Fort Leavenworth

Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, established in 1827, is home to the U.S. Army’s Combined Arms Command (CAC) and the Command and General Staff College, which grew out of the School of Application for Cavalry and Infantry that Gen. William T. Sherman set up in 1881, according to the Fort Leavenworth MilitaryINSTALLATIONS overview.

Arriving and checking in

Kansas City International Airport is about 20 miles southeast of the post, and there are no commercial buses, military buses or rail service to or from Fort Leavenworth, the overview says. The automated base operator line is 913-684-4021.

The IHG Holiday Inn Express, Temporary Lodging and Welcome Center, 210 Grant Ave. (913-684-3600), is open 24 hours a day, per the check-in page. Where you sign in depends on your assignment:

Permanent-party Soldiers assigned to the Combined Arms Command sign in and in-process with G1 in Building 119, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and closed the second Wednesday of the month from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.).
Medical and dental activity personnel report to the Medical Company orderly room on the second floor of Munson Army Health Center.
U.S. Disciplinary Barracks personnel sign in with the S-1 or staff duty noncommissioned officer in Building 429, at McPherson and Blunt Avenue.

Housing: Frontier Heritage Communities

Living on post is voluntary except for Key and Essential Positions designated by the Installation Commander, and on-post family housing “is privatized and managed by Frontier Heritage Communities”, per the housing page. Personnel with dependents can apply before arrival; the service member’s report date determines position on waiting lists. The Post Housing Office is at 2200 Hancock (913-682-6300).

All Soldiers reporting to Fort Leavenworth are required to report to the Housing Services Office, 731 McClellan Avenue, Building 48 (913-684-5681), which helps with off-post rentals and landlord problems. The page cautions: “Accepting on-post housing is not justification to break a lease or rental agreement.”

Pets in family housing: up to four dogs or cats per household, a $200 deposit per pet for the first two, and no Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers or the other breeds the page lists, or crosses of them.

Medical care: no emergency room on post

“Munson Army Health Center does not have an emergency room or a walk-in clinic”, the health care page says. For a major emergency, call 911. If directed to an emergency room, the local civilian hospital with a 24-hour staffed emergency room is St. John’s Hospital; active-duty Soldiers should use the Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center Emergency Room. After civilian urgent or emergency care, contact your primary care physician within 24 hours so the authorization can be put in the system.

Munson, 550 Pope Ave. (913-684-6250), serves TRICARE Prime beneficiaries on a same-day appointment system, and the nurse advice line is 800-874-2273, option 1.

Schools: USD 207 through grade nine

“Fort Leavenworth residents are zoned to attend Fort Leavenworth USD 207 through grade nine”, the education page says. USD 207 operates three elementary schools and one junior high school, Patton Junior High School. On-post students in grades 10 through 12 attend Leavenworth High School (Leavenworth USD 453), and USD 207 provides bus transportation to it. Pre-kindergarten requires living on post for the whole school year. School Liaison: 913-684-1655.

Legal assistance

The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, 415 Custer (913-684-4944), houses legal assistance and the claims office (913-684-4945), per the legal assistance page. Notary service is walk-in during business hours.

Weather

Tornado season is April through October, though tornadoes can occur at any time of year; the garrison homepage, Facebook page and My Army Post app carry critical base updates, per the installation home page.
