“Fort Meade is virtually a city in itself.” The Fort Meade MilitaryINSTALLATIONS page describes 5,400 acres, 65.5 paved miles of roads and about 1,300 buildings, and warns that there is a very limited bus shuttle on post, so having your own vehicle is highly recommended. The Fort Meade overview counts over 18,000 military personnel, almost 3,500 of them Army active duty and the rest from the Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

Fort George G. Meade was established as Camp Meade in 1917, one of 16 cantonments built to prepare the American Expeditionary Forces for World War I, and named for Union Civil War officer Major General George Gordon Meade. When read in October 2026, the overview said: “The cost of living in the Baltimore-Washington Metro Area is 21 percent higher than the national average.”

Reporting: by branch

“All incoming military personnel report to their individual commands/units and sponsor for each branch specific orientation.” Each branch has its own reporting and after-hours procedures, so tell your command and sponsor when you are arriving and where you are staying, the check-in page says. For Soldiers, garrison in-processing week starts from the day you sign into your unit or the next duty day, and attendance for all five days is required. Marine, Navy, Air Force and civilian personnel report to their own command or personnel office for their service’s orientation.

All on-post phone numbers are in the 301 area code unless otherwise indicated. Hand-held phone use without a hands-free device while driving is prohibited on DoD installations, and the check-in page notes that vehicle registration is not required on Fort Meade.

Housing: Corvias

“Privatized housing on Fort Meade is managed by Corvias and consists of 2,628 family housing units in six neighborhoods and an apartment complex with 434 apartments”, per the housing page; the apartments are Reece Crossings. “Privatized military family housing is not mandatory.” Military personnel attached or assigned for duty at Fort Meade have priority over personnel attached within a 50-mile radius. To apply, you complete a Corvias housing application with your PCS orders and dependency verification, and the government housing page recommends asking Corvias directly about wait times.

Single military personnel contact the Bachelor Housing Office at 6405 Simonds St. (301-677-4783); check your branch’s rules before moving off post, as you could be denied Basic Allowance for Housing. For off-post temporary lodging, the Residential Communities Initiative Housing Office has a list of extended-stay and pet-friendly hotels (301-677-7748).

Temporary lodging: Candlewood Suites

Army Lodging’s main office is at Candlewood Suites, Building 4690, per the temporary housing page; reservations are accepted up to 90 days in advance for TDY and PCS personnel (410-674-7700). The page gives first priority to Army Defense Information Schools students. If you are moving during the peak PCS months of May through September, the page recommends at least 30 days’ advance notice. The check-in page says the facility is pet friendly.

Medical care: no emergency room

“KIMBROUGH AMBULATORY CARE CENTER DOES NOT HAVE AN EMERGENCY ROOM. PLEASE CALL 911 OR GO TO THE NEAREST EMERGENCY ROOM.” The health care page lists nearby emergency rooms, including Howard County General Hospital (410-740-7890) and University of Maryland Baltimore-Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie (410-787-4000). The central appointment number is 833-286-3734, Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Schools: Anne Arundel County

“There are no DODEA schools on Fort Meade.” On post there is one early education center, three elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school, all run by Anne Arundel County Public Schools, per the education page. Children register in their county of residence; the page says Howard County does not allow out-of-county registration, and an out-of-county school elsewhere may charge tuition. Bring your child’s birth certificate and immunization record to enroll.

Emergency help during the move

Aid societies can help with unexpected PCS costs, the emergency assistance page says: Army Emergency Relief (301-677-6906), Air & Space Forces Aid Society (703-972-2650), Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society (301-388-8418) and Coast Guard Mutual Aid Society (703-875-0404).

Before you arrive

Plan on bringing a vehicle, find out your own branch’s reporting procedure from your command, ask Corvias about wait times before you sign an off-post lease, and book Candlewood Suites early if you move between May and September.
