Fort Shafter is on the island of Oahu, a few miles from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, according to MilitaryINSTALLATIONS’ pages for U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii, which cover Fort Shafter together with Schofield Barracks. Because the two posts share one garrison, the main rules for a move, from reporting unaccompanied to the Housing Services Office’s five-day rule, are the same at both and are set out in the Schofield Barracks guide.

What is specific to Fort Shafter

  • Housing office: the South Regional Office, Building 1004, 111 Seventh St., Fort Shafter, serves Fort Shafter, Tripler Army Medical Center, Aliamanu Military Reservation and Red Hill: 808-275-3800, per the USAG Hawaii government housing page.
  • Child care: the Fort Shafter Child Development Center is at 462 Hase Drive, Building 900: 808-787-4048, per the USAG Hawaii child care page.
  • School: Shafter Elementary School serves kindergarten through 6th grade, per the USAG Hawaii education page; it is a Hawaii Department of Education school, because “There are no DoD Schools in Hawaii.”
  • Veterinary care: the Fort Shafter Veterinary Clinic, 435 Pierce Road (808-433-9739), provides routine checkups, vaccinations, microchips and non-trauma care for active duty and reservists on active orders; the page says most emergency pet care is provided by local veterinary clinics.

Rules you share with the garrison

The garrison strongly recommends reporting to USAG Hawaii unaccompanied, all personnel with dependents must report to the Housing Services Office within five days of arrival, and pit bulls and pit bull mixes are prohibited on the installation; all three are covered in the Schofield Barracks guide. Hawaii’s rabies quarantine rules for dogs and cats, its statewide public school system and the only military emergency room on Oahu, at Tripler Army Medical Center, are in the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam guide.

Housing and school calls

Call the South Regional Office about family housing before you arrive, and ask the School Liaison which Hawaii DOE school serves the housing you are offered.
