“The 75th Air Base Wing provides base operational support for the Ogden Air Logistics Center, the 388th and 419th Fighter Wings, and numerous additional tenant units”, according to the Hill MilitaryINSTALLATIONS page. The Hill overview places the base in Davis County in northern Utah, adjacent to Interstate 15 and approximately 30 miles north of Salt Lake City, with Clearfield, Clinton, Kaysville, Bountiful, Layton, Sunset, Roy, Riverdale and Ogden among the surrounding communities.
The overview traces the name to December 1939, when the War Department named the site “Hill Field” in honor of Major Ployer Peter Hill; Hill Field became Hill Air Force Base on February 5, 1948.
Getting there
From the north, the overview’s directions follow Interstate 15 South to Exit 334, turn left onto Highway 193 and follow it for about two miles to Hill Field Road, with the South Gate on the left.
Check-in
“If arriving during normal duty hours of 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. MST, report to your unit’s commander support staff. If arriving after hours, report to your unit CSS on the next duty day.” That is the rule on the check-in page. If you cannot reach your sponsor, contact your gaining unit’s command section during duty hours, or the Military Personnel Section’s Customer Service Desk at 801-777-1673.
Your commander support staff schedules you for the Newcomer Orientation that fits your rank or position, and spouses are invited; Airmen at their first duty station attend First Term Enlisted Newcomer Orientation. Arrive and Thrive is an orientation for military spouses; the Military and Family Readiness Center has dates at 801-777-4681. If you get married before you relocate, inform your commander or first sergeant and your assignment counselor at the Military Personnel Flight so your assignment can be updated to “with dependents”.
Temporary lodging: Mountain View Inn
“You do not need orders before reserving lodging”, the check-in page says. Call the Mountain View Inn at 801-777-1844 as soon as you are notified of the PCS; the office is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., 7 days a week, per the temporary housing page. Service members arriving with family members may stay in the temporary lodging facilities for up to 30 days, and unaccompanied members on PCS orders may remain in transient quarters up to 30 days. Pet-friendly rooms are limited: a maximum of two pets (cat or dog) per unit, proof of rabies vaccination within one year at check-in, and an additional fee of $10 per unit.
Housing
The Military Housing Office at 7437 6th Street, Building 430, provides off-base referral and relocation support and referrals to on-base privatized housing, per the housing page (801-775-6841). The page does not name the company that manages the privatized homes; ask the Military Housing Office which company it is and how its waiting list works.
Medical care: no emergency services
“The Hill AFB Clinic provides primary care and a limited range of specialty services. Emergency services are NOT available.” For emergencies, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room, and call your Primary Care Manager within 24 hours afterward, the health care page says. Appointments go through the Central Appointment Line at 801-586-2273, and after hours the Nurse Advice Line is at 800-874-2273. “Dental services at Hill AFB Medical Clinic are available to active duty military only.” On Wednesdays the clinic opens at 9:30 a.m.
Schools: Davis School District
“There are no K-12th grade schools located on Hill Air Force Base. Students who reside on base are zoned for Davis School District.” Busing for students living on base is provided by Davis School District, per the education page. Off-base students attend the district aligned to their address; within a 35-mile radius are the Ogden, Morgan and Weber school districts in addition to Davis. School Liaison: 801-775-5960.
If something goes wrong en route
If you have tried your sponsor, supervisor and first sergeant without success and need urgent assistance, call the Hill Air Force Base Command Post at 801-777-3007, the emergency assistance page says. It is available 24 hours a day and will contact your unit’s first sergeant anytime, day or night.
Before you arrive
Book the Mountain View Inn the day you get notification, report to your CSS during duty hours or the next duty day, ask the Military Housing Office about on-base privatized housing, and plan on a civilian emergency room for emergencies.
