Hunter Army Airfield is in Savannah, Georgia, on the southeast coast of the state, and it is run as part of the Fort Stewart garrison. “As HAAF is a subordinate installation to Fort Stewart, some services may only be available at Fort Stewart or telephonically at HAAF. In-processing for HAAF is conducted at Fort Stewart.” That note is on the Hunter MilitaryINSTALLATIONS page.

The Hunter overview says the Army assumed control of Hunter Field when the Air Force closed its base there in 1967 and developed the U.S. Army Flight Training Center in conjunction with flight training at Fort Stewart. It lists driving times from Savannah of about 2 hours to Charleston (110 miles) and Jacksonville (140 miles) and about 4 hours to Atlanta (250 miles), and, as listed in October 2026, puts Savannah’s cost of living 10% below the national average.

In-processing happens at Fort Stewart

“Whether being assigned to Fort Stewart or Hunter Army Airfield, all Soldiers must sign in at the Marne Reception Center on Fort Stewart unless you have specific directions to do otherwise.” The check-in page puts in-processing at seven days and asks you to bring the original signed leave form, a copy of your orders and any profile. Submit a proper leave request before taking permissive leave for house hunting, and fill out DA Form 5434 to get the benefits of the Sponsorship Program. The Marne Reception Center and Winn Army Community Hospital are covered in the Fort Stewart guide.

Single and unaccompanied Soldiers E1 to E4 are assigned a shared room in the Fort Stewart post barracks during in-processing, per the government housing page; to determine eligibility, call the reception center at 571-801-0626. If you are not eligible for a barracks room, you are expected to have off-post living arrangements in place by the time you finish initial in-processing.

Housing: Hunter AAF Homes

“Hunter AAF Homes is the privatized, on-post, family housing, managed by Balfour Beatty Communities.” On the airfield, family housing is divided into five neighborhoods with 2 to 4 bedroom single-family, duplex, townhome and apartment styles, per the housing page. “Most homes are strictly for active-duty Army families assigned to HAAF.” The highest proportion of homes is for ranks E1 to E6.

You can apply online. When you get to Fort Stewart, bring your military ID card, LES, a copy of your orders and a DEERS form or birth certificate for every child who will live in quarters to the housing office. The Family Housing Office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Wednesday until 7:00 p.m.

Temporary lodging

The temporary lodging facility on Hunter is an IHG Army Hotels Holiday Inn Express in Building 6007, per the temporary housing page (912-355-1060). Soldiers on orders can reserve up to one year in advance, for an initial stay of up to 30 days. Pets carry an initial nonrefundable $75 fee and $7 per day starting the sixth night, with current health and shot records at check-in. The check-in page notes that you need a Statement of Non-Availability before going to off-post lodging if you want compensation.

Medical care: Tuttle Army Health Clinic

Tuttle Army Health Clinic on the installation serves active duty Soldiers, retirees and their family members, and “Care unavailable at Tuttle Clinic is usually available at Winn Army Community Hospital (WACH) at Fort Stewart”, per the health care page (571-802-0435). The clinic is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and closes at noon on the first Thursday of the month for training. Only children with an appointment are allowed in the clinic.

Schools: Savannah-Chatham County

“There are no schools on the installation for children of residents of government housing. Children living on post must attend school in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.” The district has 24 elementary, eight K-8, eight middle and 11 high schools, among others, per the education page. School Liaison Officer: 571-801-0877.

Emergency help

Army Emergency Relief offers interest-free loans and grants through its online portal, and requests needing immediate processing outside business hours are reviewed by the on-call caseworker, per the emergency assistance page (AER HQ, 571-389-7137).

Before you arrive
