Naval Base Ventura County, on the Oxnard plain about 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles, was formed on Oct. 11, 2000, when the commands of Point Mugu and Port Hueneme merged into one command with three physical locations, including San Nicolas Island, according to the NBVC MilitaryINSTALLATIONS overview. Point Mugu and Port Hueneme are about 10 miles apart, some services exist at only one of them (there is one commissary, at Port Hueneme), and there is no shuttle on or between the two bases, so a personal vehicle is crucial.

Who is here

The installation page lists Point Mugu as home to the Airborne Command Control and Logistics Wing, Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 55, Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Three Zero and NAVAIR WD, and Port Hueneme as home to the 30th Naval Construction Regiment and the Port Hueneme Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center, among other commands.

Checking in

If you are assigned to NBVC itself, report to the Quarterdeck in Building 1 on Point Mugu or use the contact number on your orders, per the check-in page. If you are reporting to a Construction Battalion Center on Port Hueneme, report to Building 1000; after normal working hours, report to the bachelor enlisted quarters on Port Hueneme. Personnel reporting to tenant commands may go directly to their command. Quarterdeck: 805-989-7209; base directory: 805-989-1110.

At Port Hueneme, Knott Gate is open 24/7 and is recommended for after-hours access; at Point Mugu, the North Mugu Road Gate is open 24/7, the overview says.

Family housing: apply and confirm within 30 days

The housing welcome center is at Port Hueneme, Building 1169 (805-982-4321), per the government housing page. All officers and enlisted personnel assigned to the NBVC area and accompanied by their family members are eligible to apply. Send a copy of your orders, your Page 2 and proof of detachment from your current command; you cannot go on the active waitlist until you have detached. You or a family member must confirm an advance application within 30 days of reporting for duty in the Ventura County area, and applications must be updated every six months until you are housed, or they are cancelled.

Barracks are available to single service members at both sites: Point Mugu 805-989-0406, Port Hueneme 805-982-4551.

Medical care: no Navy hospital nearby

“There is no Navy Medical Hospital in the area”, the health care page says; it lists community hospitals that accept TRICARE, including St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard. “For emergencies, whether on or off base, 911 should be called immediately.” Naval Branch Health Clinic Port Hueneme (805-982-6320) serves active-duty TRICARE Prime family members, enrolled retirees and their families, weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; the Point Mugu clinic is for active-duty patients only. Dental clinics at both sites serve active-duty members only.
