Naval Station Newport, on Aquidneck Island in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, is “the Navy’s premier site for training officers, officer candidates, senior enlisted personnel and midshipman candidates”, and home to the Naval War College, according to the MilitaryINSTALLATIONS page for NAVSTA Newport. The station has no base operator, the installation page says, so the Fleet and Family Support Center (401-841-2283) is your number for base and local information.

Checking in

Contact your sponsor for your command’s check-in procedure, have your orders endorsed when you first report, and contact your command pass coordinator to complete your check-in paperwork, per the check-in page. After 4 p.m. and on weekends and holidays, call the command duty officer at 401-862-8378. Newport gets very busy between Memorial Day and Labor Day, so reserve lodging well in advance: the Navy Inn (401-367-4612) or the Navy Lodge (401-849-4500). Check that all your family members are included on your orders.

Housing: the 10-day rule

Housing at Naval Station Newport is privatized and managed by Balfour Beatty Communities, with 325 student quarters and 366 staff quarters in nine communities within seven miles of the base, per the government housing page. Furnished homes are available through Balfour Beatty’s Single Sailor Program.

To join the waiting list, send a DD 1746, the Sex Offender Acknowledgement and Disclosure Form, your PCS orders and dependency verification, if applicable. If the housing office receives your package before your detachment date, you are placed on the list as of that date; otherwise, as of the date it arrives. The page adds: “To maintain your name on the waiting list, you are required to contact the Housing Service Center within 10 days of your arrival to Newport.” The Housing Office is at 690 Peary St. (401-841-2232).

Cost of living

In October 2026 the installation put Newport’s cost of living roughly 39% to 43% above the national average, per the MilitaryINSTALLATIONS overview.

Medical care

Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Center New England, 43 Smith Road (401-841-3771), has an external partnership agreement with Newport Hospital, and many of its Newport physicians are on Newport Hospital’s medical staff, per the health care page.

Schools and pets

There are six public school districts in Newport County, including the Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth districts, and the installation advises connecting with the School Liaison Officer before you move, per the education page. In Rhode Island, state law requires dog owners to license their dogs every year through the city or town clerk’s office, and no town will issue a license unless the dog has been vaccinated against rabies, per the shipping pets page.

The Regional Legal Service Office is at 690 Peary Street (401-841-1350), per the legal assistance page.

Summer lodging and the 10-day window

Book your summer lodging as soon as you have orders, and if you want military housing, contact the Housing Service Center within 10 days of arriving in Newport to keep your place on the waiting list.
