Nellis Air Force Base, part of Air Combat Command, is about eight miles northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada; the base covers more than 14,000 acres, while Nellis and its restricted ranges occupy about 5,000 square miles, according to the Nellis MilitaryINSTALLATIONS page. Nellis “is a major focal point for advanced combat aviation training”, and its workforce of about 14,914 military members, civilians and contractors makes it one of the largest single employers in Southern Nevada. The Nellis overview names housing as the biggest factor in Las Vegas’s higher cost of living and, as listed in October 2026, puts the median rental price at $2,050.
Checking in
If you arrive after duty hours, go directly to the 24-hour arrival point in the Lodging Office to sign in; during normal duty hours, go directly to your unit, per the check-in page. You can arrange temporary lodging through the Lodging Office (702-652-2711). The Visitor Control Center, 4625 Fitzgerald Blvd. (702-652-3216), is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Nellis has a mandatory hands-free cell phone policy for driving on base, and phones on speaker are not considered hands-free, the overview says.
Housing: Nellis Family Housing (Hunt)
Members should in-process at the Military Housing Office for their housing requirement, on or off base, and the office processes applications for Nellis Family Housing, run by Hunt, per the housing page. Living on base means a $0 security deposit, water, sewer and trash covered, and an electric and gas allowance; you pay any overage, and cable, internet and phone are your responsibility. The office recommends not signing a lease without inspecting the property and making sure it has a military clause. Military Housing Office: Building 4601 (702-652-1840).
Medical care
The health care page lists the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System, 6900 N Pecos Ave., North Las Vegas (702-791-9000), with an emergency room open 24/7, and the 99th Medical Group, which operates six squadrons and points to the Mike O’Callaghan Federal Medical Center for more information.
Emergencies on base
For immediate emergency assistance, call the military police (702-652-2311). If you dial 911 on a cell phone for an emergency on base, you must tell the dispatcher the emergency is on Nellis Air Force Base, and the call will be transferred to the Nellis emergency response team, per the emergency assistance page.
Schools
Las Vegas public schools are run by the Clark County School District, which the education page describes as the fifth largest in the United States with more than 300,000 students. Coral Academy of Science Nellis Campus, a public charter school on the base for pre-K through 8th grade, enrolls by lottery. School Liaison: 702-652-2894.
Before you arrive
Check BAH against Las Vegas rents, in-process with the Military Housing Office before you sign anything, and save the military police number.
