Branch: U.S. Air Force
Location: Lakenheath, Suffolk, England, United Kingdom
Installation Type: Air Base

Overview

RAF Lakenheath, located in Suffolk, England, is the largest U.S. Air Force installation in the United Kingdom and the only active USAF fighter wing in Europe. The base has been continuously operated by U.S. forces since World War II and became the permanent home of the 48th Fighter Wing in the early Cold War era. Today it serves as a critical NATO and USAFE combat airpower hub, operating the F-35A Lightning II as part of the U.S. commitment to European collective defense.

  • Average Wait Time: Waitlists vary by bedroom count and rank; typically 1 to 6 months depending on availability. E-5 and below may have shorter waits; senior NCO and officer housing may have longer waits.
  • Off-Base Housing: Popular communities include Brandon (2-3 miles), Mildenhall, Bury St. Edmunds (18 miles), Newmarket (20 miles), and Thetford. Average rent for a 3-4 bedroom house ranges from approximately GBP 1,200 to GBP 2,000+ per month depending on location and size.
  • BAH Rate Reference: Check current Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA) rates at the Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO) website.

PCS & Newcomer Info

  • Sponsorship Program: Contact gaining unit’s first sergeant or orderly room to request a sponsor. The 48th Fighter Wing has an active sponsorship program; request a sponsor as soon as PCS orders are received.
  • In-Processing: Report to the 48th Mission Support Group in-processing center (Airman Leadership School area). In-processing typically takes 2-5 days and includes medical, dental, finance, housing, and legal appointments.
  • EFMP (Exceptional Family Member Program): Managed through the 48th Medical Group and A&FRC. Enrollment is mandatory for family members with special medical or educational needs. Contact the EFMP coordinator at the 48th Medical Group prior to PCS; the UK’s educational support for special needs children differs from U.S. standards and advance planning is critical.

OCONUS-Specific Information

  • SOFA Status: Personnel operate under the NATO Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) and the U.S.-UK bilateral supplemental agreement. Under SOFA, U.S. personnel are subject to host nation jurisdiction for offenses committed off base, though the U.S. retains primary jurisdiction for offenses arising from official duties.
  • Host Nation Rules: UK law governs all activity off base. Traffic laws require driving on the left side of the road. Alcohol purchase age is 18 in the UK. The UK Dangerous Dogs Act prohibits certain dog breeds. UK firearms laws are among the most restrictive in the world — private ownership of handguns and many firearms is prohibited for civilians, including U.S. military personnel off base.
  • Curfew Policy: Personnel under 18 are subject to an on-base curfew (typically 2200-0600 or as posted). Adults are not subject to a general curfew, though unit commanders may impose mission-related curfews. Check current Liberty Wing policy for updated curfew hours.
  • Ration Card / Customs: The UK does not use a ration card system. Duty-free purchase policies apply for AAFES on-base shopping. UK customs rules limit the amount of goods (alcohol, tobacco, etc.) that can be brought into the country duty-free. Personnel should be aware of HMRC import regulations.
  • Vehicle Registration & Licensing: U.S. military personnel may drive on a valid U.S. state driver’s license for up to 12 months upon arrival. The USAFE Form 94 (Operator’s Permit for U.S. Forces in the UK) is required and issued through the installation. Vehicles must be registered with the installation’s vehicle registration office. Personnel importing personal vehicles should coordinate with the transportation office regarding road tax, insurance, and compliance with UK vehicle safety standards (MOT equivalent may be required after a period).
  • Language & Culture: English is the primary language. Suffolk has distinctive regional accents and local customs. Cultural norms differ subtly — queuing is taken seriously, tipping customs differ from the U.S., and pubs are central to social life. Britons generally understate emotions; directness can be perceived as rudeness.
  • Currency & Banking: British Pound Sterling (GBP). On-base banking includes a Navy Federal Credit Union branch and ATMs. USAA and other military-friendly banks are accessible online. It is advisable to open a local UK bank account (Barclays, Lloyds, HSBC) for direct local payments.
  • Travel Restrictions: No travel restrictions within the UK. Travel to EU/Schengen countries requires a valid passport (post-Brexit, U.S. passport holders may visit Schengen countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period). Unit commanders may require notification for international travel. Check current USAFE/PACAF travel advisories.
  • Mail: APO address: PSC [Unit Box], APO AE [ZIP code] — unit will provide specific APO address upon in-processing. Standard USPS priority military mail from the continental United States typically arrives in 7-14 days. Parcel post may take 4-8 weeks.
  • Pets: The UK Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) requires microchipping, rabies vaccination, and a valid Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued no more than 10 days before travel. The EU Pet Passport is no longer valid for entry into the UK (post-Brexit). There is no mandatory quarantine if all documentation requirements are met. Certain dog breeds are banned in the UK under the Dangerous Dogs Act: Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro. On-base housing may have additional breed and weight restrictions — verify with Balfour Beatty Communities.

Local Area & Quality of Life

  • Climate: Temperate maritime climate. East Anglia (Suffolk) is drier than much of England but still sees regular rainfall year-round. Winters are cool (1-7 degrees Celsius) with occasional frost; summers are mild and pleasant (16-23 degrees Celsius). Fog is common in autumn and winter.
  • Cost of Living: Moderate by UK standards; Suffolk is less expensive than London or the South East. The GBP/USD exchange rate significantly affects daily purchasing power for dollar-paid personnel.
  • Nearby Attractions: Cambridge (world-famous university city with punting, museums, and historic architecture); Thetford Forest (extensive cycling, walking, and outdoor recreation); Bury St. Edmunds (charming market town with an abbey and Cathedral); Norfolk Broads (accessible for boating); the Suffolk Heritage Coast; access to London via train from Thetford or Ely.
  • Spouse Employment: Military spouses may work in the UK without a separate work visa under SOFA provisions. On-base employment opportunities include AAFES, DoDEA, and NAF positions (check USAJOBS and the AF Portal for current vacancies). The local Suffolk and Cambridge job markets offer employment in healthcare, retail, education, and technology. The A&FRC provides spouse employment assistance.
