Joint Base Lewis-McChord, in Pierce County about 9.1 miles southwest of Tacoma, Washington, is home to America’s I Corps and the 62nd Airlift Wing, according to the JBLM MilitaryINSTALLATIONS page. As listed in October 2026, the installation puts its cost of living about 16% above the national average, and it tells newcomers to plan for move-in costs such as first rent, deposits and utility connection fees.

Checking in

Army: Report on arrival to the Installation Reception Center, Building 2021 on Pendleton Avenue, Lewis Main, regardless of your unit; if you are delayed, call the IRC at 253-967-7004. Expect to spend five days with the detachment, per the JBLM check-in page. Unaccompanied Soldiers E-5 and below receive billeting, bedding and a temporary meal card; accompanied Soldiers arrange their own lodging, at the Rainier Inn on JBLM Main (253-964-0211) or Candlewood Suites on McChord Field (253-300-9200). Bring your orders, DA 31 or IPPS-A absence request and your medical and dental records.

Air Force: On your first duty day at McChord Field, report to your unit’s Commander’s Support Staff in duty uniform; your unit schedules your appointments, including the in-person Newcomers Orientation.

Housing: Liberty’s waitlist and the HSO

Liberty Military Housing provides more than 5,370 homes in 23 communities on base, per the JBLM housing page. On-base housing is reserved for active-duty members, and “there are wait times for homes in all communities.” You or your active-duty spouse apply on the Liberty Military Housing website and must choose a community when you apply; your place on the list depends on your rank, your bedroom requirement and the communities you chose. A leasing specialist can answer questions at 360-858-6097.

If you are authorized BAH, the Housing Services Office counsels you before you enter into a lease, rental or purchase agreement, and its Rental Partnership Program encourages landlords to offer at least a 5 percent rent discount and to waive deposits and credit check fees (253-967-3581). Unaccompanied Soldiers E5 and below are required to live in the barracks. Unaccompanied Airmen E4 and below with less than three years of service in-process at the Consolidated Dormitory Office, 566 Outer Dr. on McChord Field (253-982-2824).

Medical care: Madigan’s emergency room

Madigan Army Medical Center has the installation’s 24-hour emergency room, and its ambulance service responds to on-base emergencies, per the JBLM health care page. “Emergency medical services are not available at the McChord Clinic”; in an emergency on McChord Field, call 911 or go to Madigan’s emergency room. The McChord Clinic, 690 Barnes Blvd. (253-982-2222), serves active-duty members, families and selected retirees. When you arrive, update your family’s TRICARE coverage with TRICARE West at 888-874-9378. Active-duty members get dental care at their assigned clinic; family members can enroll in the TRICARE Dental Program.

Schools

Students who live on JBLM are served by the Clover Park School District, which runs six elementary schools on the base, five on Lewis Main and Lewis North and one on McChord Field, per the JBLM education page. Middle and high school students living on base attend school off base by bus; middle schoolers from all three areas go to Dr. Claudia Thomas Middle School, and high schoolers from Lewis Main and Lewis North go to Lakes High School. Ask School Support Services (253-967-7195) which high school serves McChord Field housing. Register online through the Clover Park School District. In Washington, a child must be five on or before August 31 to start kindergarten, unless the child attended kindergarten in a state that allows earlier entry. Off base, Washington is a boundary state: your physical address decides your school and district.

Child care

You can put your child on the waiting list before you arrive at MilitaryChildCare.com, per the JBLM child care page. General questions go to Child and Youth Services at 253-966-2977.

Pets

If you live on JBLM, register your pets on arrival with the Housing Services Office and the Veterinary Treatment Facility at 768 Warehouse Road on McChord. Pets in base housing need proof of current rabies vaccination, a microchip and a DAPP vaccination for dogs or an FVRCP vaccination for cats, per the shipping pets page. There are no pet quarantine laws for a move to JBLM. If you live off base, follow your city’s or county’s rules.

Weapons and the road

Privately owned weapons stored or transported on the installation must be registered with the JBLM Provost Marshal Office, whatever your status, the installation page says; registration is at Waller Hall, Building 2140, or at the Lewis Main or McChord Field visitor centers, and you must not bring the weapon into those facilities. Occupants must declare any firearm in the vehicle when entering, weapons must be unloaded with ammunition stored separately, and concealed carry is prohibited on JBLM; concealed weapon permits are not valid there.

Washington law bars holding a cell phone while driving, including while stopped in traffic or at a light. Military members stationed in Washington can keep driving on their current registration until it expires, then must register in Washington or in their home-of-record state, per the motor vehicles page.

The McChord Field Legal Assistance Office is at 100 Col. Joe Jackson Blvd., Suite 1096 (253-982-5513), per the legal assistance page.

Before you arrive

Apply on the Liberty Military Housing website and choose your community, get on the child care waitlist, and register any firearm before you carry it on base. Save Madigan’s location: the McChord Clinic has no emergency services.
